Contents
1. The carnival of calculation/ 2. The telling of mathematics/ 3. Hybrids and mosaics/ 4. The poetic interface/ Conclusions and qualifications/ Index/

* This book represents a new departure in science studies: an analysis of a scientific style of writing, situating it within the context of the contemporary style of literature. Its philosophical significance is that it provides a novel way of making sense of the notion of a scientific style.

* For the first time, the Hellenistic mathematical corpus - one of the most substantial extant for the period - is placed centre-stage in the discussion of Hellenistic culture as a whole.

* Professor Netz argues that Hellenistic mathematical writings adopt a narrative strategy based on surprise, a compositional form based on a mosaic of apparently unrelated elements, and a carnivalesque profusion of detail. He further investigates how such stylistic preferences derive from, and throw light on, the style of Hellenistic poetry. This important book will be welcomed by all scholars of Hellenistic civilization as well as historians of ancient science and Western mathematics. *

* In tracing the growing power of humans over nature through increasingly powerful innovations, he compares the evolution of technology in different parts of the world, providing a much broader account than is found in other histories of technology. We also discover how small changes sometimes have dramatic results--how, for instance, the stirrup revolutionized war and gave the Mongols a deadly advantage over the Chinese. And how the nailed horseshoe was a pivotal breakthrough for western farmers. Enlivened with many illustrations, Technology offers a fascinating look at the spread of inventions around the world, both as boons for humanity and as weapons of destruction. *

* This is the second volume in a series of edited books whose aim is to collect contributed papers devoted to descriptions of the life and work of famous persons in MMS (Mechanism and Machine Science). Papers illustrate personalities by recognizing the people as well as their scientific activities, by looking mainly at technical developments in the historical evolution of the fields that today are grouped in MMS. Thus, the emphasis is on biographical notes describing the efforts and experiences of people who have contributed to the technical achievements at the core of each contributed paper. The papers in this second volume again cover a wide range within the field of the History of Mechanical Engineering with specific focus on MMS and will be of interest and motivation to the work (historical or not) of many. *

Contents
* This seven volume series is intended to give in as complete a form as possible the correspondence of Isaac Newton. The project to bring Newton's correspondence to the public domain began in 1947 when the Newton Letters Committee was founded at the Royal Society, with the following principles being adopted for the work: to include all letters written by Newton; all letters addressed to Newton (both to be published in extenso); extracts from contemporary letters referring to Newton; and shorter memorabilia illustrating the life of Newton, particularly minor and hitherto unpublished manuscripts of Newton. To supplement the correspondence, there are notes throughout the series which provide connecting links relating to any given letter, as well as those of a biographical and bibliographical nature. There are also elucidatory notes that contain explanations of language, symbols and obscurities.

* Mathematical formul are also explored, showing a richness and depth of analytical theory in Newton's letters even where more mundane matters are being discussed. Letters originally written in Latin are for the most part reproduced with a full translation, or else by a short paraphrase, in English. The spelling, punctuation, use of capital letters and abbreviations are retained, as far as possible, just as the author wrote them. *
